Summary

The 10th anniversary edition of the second in Laini Taylor’s breathtaking fantasy trilogy

The story continues in this astounding, must-read sequel to Daughter of Smoke and Bone 。 。 。

Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a new way of living – one without massacres and torn throats and bonfires of the fallen, without revenants or bastard armies or children ripped from their mothers’ arms to take their turn in the killing and dying。

Once, the lovers lay entwined in the moon’s secret temple and dreamed of a world that was like a jewel-box without a jewel – a paradise waiting for them to find it and fill it with their happiness。

This was not that world。

The second in the series from Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy did not disappoint。 Whilst this book was much more warlike, and in some places gruesome; Ms Taylor's eloquence didn't disappoint。 We continue to learn about the chimaera and angels; more individual characters, complexity and utterly compelling reading。Do read them in order and enjoy the lyrical prose, complex relationships and of course the painful ravages of war。 I've just begun reading book three。。。 have to find out what happens The second in the series from Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy did not disappoint。 Whilst this book was much more warlike, and in some places gruesome; Ms Taylor's eloquence didn't disappoint。 We continue to learn about the chimaera and angels; more individual characters, complexity and utterly compelling reading。Do read them in order and enjoy the lyrical prose, complex relationships and of course the painful ravages of war。 I've just begun reading book three。。。 have to find out what happens next! 。。。more

*sigh* Reading this book makes me feel like I'm watching a super depressing Korean drama。 One of those where I keep telling myself, I can't take this, this is just unnecessarily too sad and plays with my emotions in such a crazy way, but then I am so hooked that I just have to keep going to find out what happens and hope that everything will right itself at the end。 The writing, again, is just beautiful。 Everything is painted so vivid, I can get lost in it and pretend the world is real。 I really *sigh* Reading this book makes me feel like I'm watching a super depressing Korean drama。 One of those where I keep telling myself, I can't take this, this is just unnecessarily too sad and plays with my emotions in such a crazy way, but then I am so hooked that I just have to keep going to find out what happens and hope that everything will right itself at the end。 The writing, again, is just beautiful。 Everything is painted so vivid, I can get lost in it and pretend the world is real。 I really love Laini's writing, but man can this be less sad!! 。。。more

I must say, that this book was quite the struggle to read。 Not only was I juggling school while reading the book, but I was also struggling to stay invested in the plot。 The amount of times I was about to DNF (did not finish) the book was insane。 Sure, it picks up in the end, but I was not invested at all and I was mostly skimming to find more interesting points in the story。 For example, I would skip any boring scene with Karou and Akiva to one about Zuzanna and Mic just doing cute couple thing I must say, that this book was quite the struggle to read。 Not only was I juggling school while reading the book, but I was also struggling to stay invested in the plot。 The amount of times I was about to DNF (did not finish) the book was insane。 Sure, it picks up in the end, but I was not invested at all and I was mostly skimming to find more interesting points in the story。 For example, I would skip any boring scene with Karou and Akiva to one about Zuzanna and Mic just doing cute couple things and being wholesome。 AND THEY AREN’T EVEN THE MAIN CHARACTERS!!!! But the ending was mildly interesting and I hope the last book is better。 🤓 。。。more

While the first book was pretty good, this one was so much better。 The second half especially was just。。。。epic。 I am now very solidly vibing with this series。 Can’t wait to see what happens in the finale。 SPOILERS BELOW:I’m kinda bummed that Hazael died so visibly on page。 Not much hope for him to come back。 Still not giving up on Brimstone, though。 There’s a whole ‘nother book after all。

This book was not as good as the first because I found it to be slow at times。 However the good parts were so good。 (Mainly Karous point of view chapters) Karou has gone through so much and she had pretty good character development through this book。 Poor sweet Ziri, I just want him to be happy。 I’m very interested to see what will happen in the next book!

Damn。。。 that book was one wild ride。 I liked it so much better than the first one honestly! There wasn't as much of the romance in it, which I think I actually liked more in this case。 The world building is still so interesting and I really enjoyed it。I will say, there are some very heavy parts in this book, and it honestly surprised me that they had it in YA。 Trigger warnings for sexual assault, torture, murder, and genocide。 There are a lot of heavy themes in this book, so be prepared for that Damn。。。 that book was one wild ride。 I liked it so much better than the first one honestly! Okayy。。。 this was not what I expected。 I am conflicted while writing this review because this seemed like the type of book in which many things are happening but nothing is happening at the same time。 Most of the chapters at the beginning I cannot even recall。 And more towards the end, things turned dark。。。 and sort of traumatizing? The only things I can remember about the book are the violence and the depressing atmosphere。 By the way, Mik and Zuzana should have their own book (like a romantic Okayy。。。 this was not what I expected。 I am conflicted while writing this review because this seemed like the type of book in which many things are happening but nothing is happening at the same time。 Most of the chapters at the beginning I cannot even recall。 And more towards the end, things turned dark。。。 and sort of traumatizing? 3,5 Stars。 I love Taylors writing style so much。 She has a way with words that I cannot describe and that is just utterly beautiful。 But I think especially in the First half of the book not a lot was happening。 It felt like a build up for the third book。 I enjoy this world so much and am excited to continue。 I am hoping for a big banggg in the next book。

Unfortunately, this book suffered a bit from middle book syndrome。 In the beginning of this book Karou’s situation was a bit dire but I was really frustrated with her。 I just felt like now that she had all her memories it should be easier for her to realize the intentions and machinations of those around her。 It just took her a while to get out of her funk。 I felt like only when Zuzana and Mik showed up did the book become interesting and even then, not much happened until the end。 I still enjoy Unfortunately, this book suffered a bit from middle book syndrome。 In the beginning of this book Karou’s situation was a bit dire but I was really frustrated with her。 I just felt like now that she had all her memories it should be easier for her to realize the intentions and machinations of those around her。 It just took her a while to get out of her funk。 I felt like only when Zuzana and Mik showed up did the book become interesting and even then, not much happened until the end。 I still enjoyed it though, it was a very quick read。 。。。more

Despite being in a weird headspace this book kept me hooked enough to continue reading。 It took longer than expected but i finally finished it。 I really enjoyed how the story unfolded and how Karou grew as a character。 The world building is done subtly but effectively and adds just enough details。 Definitely looking forward to the last book。

Again, the expectations were high, in hopes the sequel would be better than the first as the reviews seemed to lean towards, but then still, I found the story boring。 The characters were not thrilling, and I felt there was a lack of growth upwards and just lateral for Karou and Akiva。 The story hops around barely explaining things as if you are supposed to know what the narrator is speaking about。 I found myself zoning out and coming back, having to re-read pages because I forgot what is going o Again, the expectations were high, in hopes the sequel would be better than the first as the reviews seemed to lean towards, but then still, I found the story boring。 The characters were not thrilling, and I felt there was a lack of growth upwards and just lateral for Karou and Akiva。 The story hops around barely explaining things as if you are supposed to know what the narrator is speaking about。 I found myself zoning out and coming back, having to re-read pages because I forgot what is going on。Do I think this installment was better than the first? Absolutely, but I still find the story lacking overall。 I'm not sure if it's the third person narrative or the excessive use of words that were clearly looked up in a thesaurus, but there is something about these books that is not sticking for me。 。。。more

If you thought Daughter of Smoke and Bone was good, Days of Blood and Starlight will blow your mind。A deadly war between the seraphim and the chimaera is brewing, placing Akiva and Karou on different sides。 Karou, who has aligned herself with the chimaera, has taken over Brimstone's mantle as a resurrectionist。 She works day and night, building armies for the war。 Meanwhile, Akiva, who believes that the bloodshed has gone on for far too long, plots to usurp the seraph emperor。 But when the chima If you thought Daughter of Smoke and Bone was good, Days of Blood and Starlight will blow your mind。A deadly war between the seraphim and the chimaera is brewing, placing Akiva and Karou on different sides。 Karou, who has aligned herself with the chimaera, has taken over Brimstone's mantle as a resurrectionist。 She works day and night, building armies for the war。 Meanwhile, Akiva, who believes that the bloodshed has gone on for far too long, plots to usurp the seraph emperor。 But when the chimaera-seraphim war starts to rage outside of Eretz, Karou and Akiva must find a way to bring peace to a broken world。_____________________________________________________________I'll admit that Days of Blood and Starlight is a lot heavier than Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but that doesn't make it a less enjoyable read。 So, here's the good, the bad, and the ugly。The Good: 1。 Eretz。 We didn't get to see a lot of Eretz (the world where chimaera and seraphim reside) in Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but a lot of chapters in Days of Blood and Starlight are set in Eretz。 I really loved getting a new glimpse into the Seraph Empire and the seraph imperial family, which wasn't really mentioned in the first book。 2。 Liraz and Hazael。 I finished Days of Blood and Starlight with a newfound respect for Liraz and Hazael, Akiva's half-siblings。 I originally thought that they were just mindless seraph soldiers, but Liraz and Hazael are so much more than that。 Out of the two, I think Liraz is my favorite。 She has an aggressive streak, but she's also very protective and caring。 3。 The dialogue。 Laini Taylor's writing conveys so many emotions- sadness, loss, love, hope, happiness, romance, humor, anguish, and wistfulness。 Every little tidbit of dialogue in Days of Blood and Starlight is like a work of art。 The Bad: 1。 The pacing, especially near the middle of the book。 There were some parts of Days of Blood and Starlight that were a little too slow for my liking。 I would've preferred a faster pace during the middle, but overall, the pacing didn't bother me much。 The Ugly: There was nothing ugly in Days of Blood and Starlight! Aside from my complaint about the pacing of the novel, I don't have any large grievances against Days of Blood and Starlight。 Days of Blood and Starlight is a captivating, action-filled sequel to Daughter of Smoke and Bone。 I'm really excited to see how the series wraps up in Dreams of Gods and Monsters。 。。。more
